Despite being banned, asbestos remains one of the most significant workplace health risks\u2014and most exposures are preventable. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As Asbestos Awareness Week comes to a close, the key message is clear: recognition and prevention save lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Why prevention is critical<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Asbestos is dangerous when disturbed. Once fibres are released into the air and inhaled, they can cause irreversible lung damage. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Did you know? Asbestos fibres can be 700 times smaller, or even thinner, than a human hair\u2014 completely invisible to the naked eye, and impossible to detect without testing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Diseases such as asbestosis and mesothelioma often take decades to develop, meaning many people are unaware they\u2019ve been exposed until it\u2019s too late. Even minimal exposure can have serious long-term consequences. The only safe approach is to avoid exposure altogether.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Where asbestos may be found<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Any building constructed before 2000 may contain asbestos. It is commonly found in:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Roofing sheets<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pipe lagging and insulation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Floor tiles and adhesives<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Textured coatings (walls and ceilings)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Asbestos Insulation Boards (AIB)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019re unsure, stop work immediately and arrange for an assessment.
