Over the last year, HazardCo has received 4599 incident reports \u2013 720 of those were hand or finger injuries. That highlights just how often these injuries happen, so let\u2019s look at how they happen and what we can do to prevent them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Common hand injuries<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are plenty of ways hands and fingers can get hurt on-site, but the most common injuries include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Crushed fingers and hands<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cuts and lacerations\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Strains and Sprains\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Burns and chemical conditions e.g. dermatitis\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These injuries happen due to faulty equipment, falling objects, getting caught between materials, electrical issues, and simple mistakes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Hand tools:\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many hand and finger injuries occur from everyday tools such as hammers, saws, pliers,utility knives and circular saws, and nail guns. These injuries are often caused by rushing, fatigue, complacency, using damaged tools, or not having the right training.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The long-term impact<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hand injuries aren\u2019t just painful \u2013 they affect your ability to work and go about your daily life. Even minor injuries can weaken grip strength and finger movement. More serious injuries could mean permanent damage or loss of function.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How to reduce hand injuries<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keeping hands safe is all about awareness and good habits. Here\u2019s how you and your team can reduce the risk:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Check your tools<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 If it\u2019s damaged, replace it. Don\u2019t try to fix a broken tool \u2013 swap it out! Ensure sure all safety mechanisms and guards are in place and working properly before use<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Take your time<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 Make sure you have a firm grip and check your surroundings before using a tool.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Use the right tool for the job<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 It might sound obvious, but using the wrong tool can be dangerous.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Think ahead<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 If you\u2019re pulling something out or using force, consider what might happen next. Are your hands in the clear? Do you have solid footing? What\u2019s behind you?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Watch your hand placement!<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 Keep your free hand well away from the danger zone. If you need it to steady something, make sure it\u2019s clear of blades and hammerheads.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Pre-start checks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 Before using a tool, make sure it\u2019s in good working order. If not, remove it from service.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Hold safety demos<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 Some suppliers offer training and demos \u2013 take advantage of them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Include hand safety in toolbox talks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 Keep hand and finger safety top of mind.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Wearing the right PPE<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 Gloves and other protective gear can make a big difference.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Leading by example<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Safety isn&#8217;t just about following the rules. It&#8217;s about actions and leading by example. Leaders set the tone by demonstrating safe practices, sharing real stories of how hand injuries can impact lives and actively monitoring worksite conditions.
