A guide to setting up H&S on your building site

Setting up health and safety on a construction site can feel like a massive job, but it doesn’t need to be a headache. Whether you’re running the project or working as a subby, here’s your straightforward guide to keeping the crew safe and your back covered.

Managing your contractors

If you’re the main contractor, you need to know your subbies have the skills to work safely before they step foot on-site. Talk to them upfront to make sure their H&S covers:

  • Hazards, risk controls, and emergency plans – Ask: “Can I see your RAMS, A good subbie has a written risk assessment ready on day one, not a promise to email one over later.
  • Worker training and competency – Ask: “Can I see your team’s tickets?” That’s CSCS cards, plus CPCS or NPORS for anyone on plant. Don’t just take their word for it.
  • Machinery, plant, and hazardous substances – Ask: “What’s coming on site, and where’s the paperwork?” Think LOLER certificates, COSHH sheets, and proof the plant’s been serviced. No paperwork, no kit on site.

Chasing paperwork for dozens of subbies gets messy fast. Use HazardCo’s automated Pre-Qualification tools to sort your contractors before work starts and ditch the paper chase for good.

Setting up your site

Before the first shovel hits the dirt, sort your site fencing, toilets, handwashing facilities, and emergency equipment. Then jump into the HazardCo Hub, plug in your project details, set your site hazards, and assign your contractors. Your CPP will automatically send out to everyone involved.

Last step: pop your HazardCo Hazard Board (with its site-specific QR code) right at the entrance.

Running the build

Once work is underway, keep safety rolling through the HazardCo App:

  • Scan in and out: Get everyone to scan the QR code on the Hazard Board for a quick digital induction and daily check-in
  • Site Reviews – Encourage subbies and operatives to complete site reviews via the HazardCo app
  • Plant and Machinery Pre-Start – Operators can use this to complete pre-use safety checks on all plant
  • Incident register – Encourage the reporting of all accidents, incidents and near misses through the HazardCo app

You can also log your Toolbox Meetings and quickly put together RAMS and CoSHH assessments if anything unexpected comes up

Subbies: Working on someone else’s site

If you’re a subby moving between jobs, you’re still responsible for your own work area. Create a set of RAMS on the app, and report any near-misses on the spot.
