{"id":583,"date":"2024-04-16T09:45:12","date_gmt":"2024-04-16T09:45:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hazardco.com\/nz\/?p=583"},"modified":"2024-08-05T00:15:35","modified_gmt":"2024-08-05T00:15:35","slug":"hazardous-substances-get-your-register-live-and-up-to-date","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hazardco.com\/nz\/blog\/hazardous-substances-get-your-register-live-and-up-to-date\/","title":{"rendered":"Hazardous substances: Get your register live and up to date"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Proper management of hazardous substances on-site is important to keep everyone and our environment safe.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Legally speaking, hazardous substances refer to substances which have any of the following properties:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Explosive<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Flammable<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Able to oxidise &#8211; (create oxygen)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Corrosive<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Toxic to humans or the environment<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you are using any hazardous substance in the workplace you need to make sure they are stored, used, transported and disposed of correctly, which will help to reduce the risk to anyone who uses or comes into contact with them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To capture what hazardous substances you are using you must by law have a hazardous substance register along with the relevant safety data sheet (SDS).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is a Hazardous substance register?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is a list of all your hazardous substances (including hazardous waste) that is used, handled, or stored at any of your sites. Having a register will ensure you know the substances you have on-site, the safety measures you need to follow, and what to do in case of an emergency.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Keeping a Hazardous substance register<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keeping your register in a central location on your site means that in case of an emergency, it can be accessed quickly by anyone who needs it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here are some key bits of information that need to be included on your register:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The name of the substance and, if available, its UN number\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A current safety data sheet or a condensed version of the key information from the safety data sheet<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The maximum amount that is stored at the workplace<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Where it\u2019s located<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Specific storage requirements<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Any hazardous waste<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Not only do you need the information above, but you must also make sure that the register is up to date and available on-site.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As the register represents the maximum amount of the substance held, it means it\u2019s not going to be a daily task to keep it up-to-date. But if the maximum quantity changes, the register needs to reflect this. We recommend that you review your register each time you make a change to ensure it\u2019s up to date and accurate.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How do I create a hazardous substance register?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Creating your hazardous substance register is made much simpler with our Hazardous Substances Register, HazardCo members can access this via the HazardCo Hub in the templates section.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Safety Data Sheet (SDS)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The purpose of a safety data sheet (SDS) is to provide key information about hazardous substances to the people who handle, use or store them or who could be exposed to them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>An SDS tells you<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The product <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(its name, ingredients and properties)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Who manufactured or imported it\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How the product can affect your health\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How to use, store and transport it safely<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How to manage an emergency involving the substance<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Remember it is the business owner\u2019s responsibility to have an up to date SDS for each hazardous substance and make sure that their workers have access to it.
