Therefore, every tradesperson is likely to come into contact with asbestos at work sooner or later. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important for you to understand how to manage the risk from working with or near asbestos, and how to protect yourself and others from exposure to airborne asbestos fibers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Surveying and Testing<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Areas that we recommend getting tested are cladding, roofing, vinyl, fibre cement sheeting, internal ceilings, and plumbing lagging.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are 3 main types of testing or surveying; <\/span><b>Management<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>Refurbishment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><b>Demolition<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and each of these is designed for a specific purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Asbestos Management Survey:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Are designed to locate asbestos in a property. This survey is typically used prior to minor maintenance work or to help manage any potential risks associated with asbestos.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Asbestos Refurbishment Survey:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Are designed to locate asbestos in a property before major work commences.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Asbestos Demolition Survey:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Are designed to locate asbestos in a property before it is demolished. This survey is also designed to give clearance to the area once demolition has been completed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is important that when you are conducting work that requires planning permission, it is likely that you will require a demolition or refurbishment survey to search for asbestos present. As the contractor, you have a legal requirement to ensure asbestos is identified and removed before any work begins that may disturb the asbestos in your client\u2019s home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can refer to the Healthy Homes NZ website for more details on asbestos testing <\/span><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthyhomesnz.co.nz\/asbestos-testing\/\">here<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h2><b>Discovering Asbestos<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What to do if you or your workers uncover or damage materials that may contain asbestos:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stop work immediately.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keep people away.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Minimise the risk of spreading contamination to other areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Get advice from an expert such as an asbestos assessor or a suitably qualified health and safety consultant.
