When buildings are demolished they can release materials that create hazardous dust (airborne contaminants) which can be hazardous to workers\u2019 health. Understanding the risks will help you to identify how best to manage the risks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why is dust dangerous?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Exposure to hazardous dust can lead to serious health conditions, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Silicosis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 A lung disease caused by inhaling fine silica dust, common in concrete, brick, and stone materials.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Lung Cancer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 Prolonged exposure to certain airborne contaminants increases the risk.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Asthma &amp; COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 Inhaling dust particles can trigger or worsen respiratory conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Skin &amp; Eye Irritations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 Dust exposure can cause infections and long-term discomfort.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Health and exposure monitoring<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a business, you have a duty to monitor your workers\u2019 health when they\u2019re exposed to dust and other hazardous materials. Regular health monitoring helps identify early signs of illness and ensures that the dust control measures in place are working effectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0Health monitoring process should include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">collection of workers\u2019 demographic, medical and occupational histories<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">records of workers\u2019 exposure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">respiratory questionnaire and function tests<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in some cases, chest x-ray or other radiological procedure<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is important that you get your worker\u2019s consent to monitor their health and engage them in this process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Health monitoring should be carried out by a trained and competent person.
