Incorrect use or untrained operators can lead to serious injuries or worse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Training and Supervision<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Machinery should only be used by workers who are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Trained and competent with the equipment they&#8217;re operating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Supervised, especially if they\u2019re new or unfamiliar with the task<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Provided with clear instructions, risk assessments and task analysis<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Regularly assess operator competency through refresher training, observations and feedback. Keep training records and verify workers have the appropriate licenses.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Pre-Start Check &#8211; A quick routine that makes a big difference<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Before using any machinery, complete a daily prestart check. These checks must be done by a trained and competent person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Visual checks (before turning the machine on):<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fluid and oil levels are good, and there are no leaks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Battery is clean, charged and secured<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All safety guards and features are in place and undamaged<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Warning signs are in place and easy to read<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All clips, pins, and attachments are secure and not worn or damaged<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hydraulic hoses are in good condition and lubricated<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Stationary test (machine is on but not moving):<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Horn, reversing alarm and lights are working<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pedals, and control panel are working properly<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bucket and arms fully extend, retract and tilt smoothly<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Moving test (short drive):<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Steering is responsive<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brakes function correctly<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use the manufacturer\u2019s pre-start checklist, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/members.hazardco.com\/sites\/default\/files\/Heavy%20Machinery%20Pre-Start%20Checksheet_0.xlsx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">HazardCo Heavy Machinery Prestart Checklist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or the HazardCo App Plant\/Machinery Pre-start tool to guide your checks.
