{"id":404,"date":"2023-01-30T07:46:08","date_gmt":"2023-01-30T07:46:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hazardco.com\/nz\/?p=404"},"modified":"2024-08-21T23:49:33","modified_gmt":"2024-08-21T23:49:33","slug":"keeping-safe-when-cleaning-up-and-repairing-sites-after-a-storm-or-flood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hazardco.com\/nz\/blog\/keeping-safe-when-cleaning-up-and-repairing-sites-after-a-storm-or-flood\/","title":{"rendered":"Keeping safe when cleaning up and repairing sites after a storm or flood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When you\u2019re able to get back on site after a flood or storm, here are the hazards, risks and control measures you should consider to help reduce the risk of injury and illness to yourself, your workers and others involved in the clean up and repair effort.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Some common hazards following a storm or flood:<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Electrical \u2013 Water damage, loss of power, damaged electrical installations\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Biological hazards and fauna \u2013 Contaminated flood water and displaced fauna\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Asbestos \u2013 Damaged building materials that contain asbestos\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Slips, trips and falls \u2013 Uneven surfaces from storm\/ floods<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hazardous chemicals \u2013 Buried, moved or damaged hazardous chemical containers including corrosives, oils, pesticides\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Psychological stress \u2013 Remember to check on your team, the emotional impacts of a storm or flood can be overwhelming, particularly if they are dealing with personal damage<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Risk Management\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Identify the hazards \u2013 What are the hazards on your site including any newly introduced hazards due to the storm or flood?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Assess the level of risk \u2013 What is the likelihood of exposure to the hazard, and the consequences (what harm could be done)?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Control the risk \u2013 Identify and implement suitable control measures and ensure the risk has been reduced to an acceptable level prior to undertaking related work.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Review the control measures \u2013 Regularly assess how effective the controls are. It\u2019s important to stop work and reassess if conditions change or if you have introduced any new hazards.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Safety tips when undertaking the cleanup and repair work<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Work out the order of the work to be done so that new risks are not introduced, e.g. if you move things in the wrong order is there a possibility of creating instability.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ensure surfaces are stable and access to areas with unstable floors are safe.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Have a licensed electrical contractor check any electrical appliances or equipment you suspect has been submerged or damaged.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Consider workers performing cleanup in teams\/ pairs where possible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wash your hands well before eating and drinking, after contact with mud, flood water and contaminated items and equipment.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Make sure that workers have the correct personal protective equipment to prevent injuries such as cuts and scratches or infections from contaminated flood water.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Check that your workers and contractors are not fatigued or potentially unfit to work, i.e due to mental health stressors.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Agree on what situations workers should remove themselves from, where the risk cannot be reduced to an acceptable level. Some work may have to be delayed until water subsides and other factors.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ensure emergency procedures are discussed for the site with all workers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-stringify-indent=\"0\" data-stringify-border=\"0\">Assess the area for the risk of potential collapse or slips.<\/li>\n<li data-stringify-indent=\"0\" data-stringify-border=\"0\">Do not attempt to clear up slips until they have been assessed.<\/li>\n<li data-stringify-indent=\"0\" data-stringify-border=\"0\">If there is property damage (i.e.\u00a0damage to buildings, not land) but no injuries call your local council Building Compliance team to assess if the buildings \/ site is safe to work or occupy.<\/li>\n<li data-stringify-indent=\"0\" data-stringify-border=\"0\">If you are unsure about the stability of your site or if you think it may be unsafe to go back to work contact a local engineering consultancy to provide advice on the next steps.
