Strong winds, extreme temperatures, and heavy rain can quickly lead to slips, trips, heat stress, damaged gear or vehicle accidents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Work doesn\u2019t always stop when adverse weather rolls in, so it\u2019s important to know what to do to keep your workers safe.\u00a0 However, safety must come first, so if conditions become unsuitable or too dangerous, work should stop until it is safe to continue.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><b>Weather checks and inspections<\/b><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When adverse weather occurs, it\u2019s important for you to inspect your workplace.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Heavy rain \u2013 Identify all wet or muddy surfaces, platforms, and walkways that may be in use, as these can quickly become slip and trip hazards. Implement controls such as drainage, mats, gritting, or signage to reduce risk.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Strong winds \u2013 Check that all materials have been properly stacked and secured to prevent them from falling or blowing away.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fall protection \u2013 Reinforce the importance of fall protection during wet and windy conditions. Ensure guardrails, harnesses, and anchor points are in place and suitable for the conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Extreme temperatures &#8211; Identify risks from heat and cold, such as heat stress or hypothermia. Highlight to your team that driving rules for the road also apply to your workplace, and it\u2019s important that they take care while operating work vehicles and equipment. To make sure your vehicles and plant are safe before use:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Complete a <\/span><b>Vehicle Checklist<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or <\/span><b>Pre-Start<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> before use.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Slow down and keep extra distance in wet or slippery conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Avoid operating vehicles or plant if conditions are too hazardous.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Watch the weather<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The last thing you need is for the weather to catch you by surprise. Keep an eye on the weather forecast so your workers can:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Prioritise tasks that could be affected.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Make sure they have the right gear.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Plan for possible stoppages.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A quick weather briefing at your toolbox talk keeps everyone prepared.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><b>The right PPE makes a difference<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Be vigilant when ensuring that workers are wearing proper PPE and suitable clothing when adverse weather conditions are present.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Safety helmets and hard hats should be worn where applicable to protect workers in the case of a fall, as well as from falling objects. Using liners under headgear is a great way to stay warm and keep body heat from escaping.
