It\u2019s a chance to recognise the importance of communication, accessibility, and inclusion for the Deaf community. For those of us working in construction, agriculture, horticulture and manufacturing, it\u2019s also the perfect reminder of how precious our hearing is and how easily it can be damaged by the noise we\u2019re exposed to every day.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Noise: The silent risk on-site<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Power tools, heavy machinery, vehicles, and hammering &#8211; the soundtrack of a busy site is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">loud<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. And while it might just feel like \u201cpart of the job,\u201d that constant exposure can take a serious toll on your hearing over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) happens when loud sounds damage the sensitive structures in your inner ear. Depending on the type and extent of damage, NIHL can be temporary or permanent. The good news? Unlike many other forms of hearing loss, NIHL is entirely preventable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s also very common. Some studies have indicated that between 30% and 50% of all adult hearing loss cases can be attributed to occupational noise exposure. People who work in noisy industries, like construction, agriculture, carpentry, mining, oil and gas, and the military, are especially at risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How loud is too loud?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You might be surprised at just how quickly noise becomes dangerous. Here are some benchmarks:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>85 decibels (dB):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> About as loud as heavy traffic. Safe for around 8 hours.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>100 dB:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> A chainsaw or jackhammer. Damage can occur after just 15 minutes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>110 dB+:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> A nail gun or rock concert. Even a few minutes without protection can cause permanent damage.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On a construction site, these levels are reached every day, sometimes without us even realising.<\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>Symptoms of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hearing loss doesn\u2019t usually happen all at once. Symptoms can creep up slowly, which is why many people don\u2019t notice until it\u2019s too late. Some of the most common signs of NIHL include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A feeling of fullness or pressure in your ear.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Inability to hear high-pitched sounds, like birds singing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Muffled or distorted speech, making conversations harder to follow.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tinnitus &#8211; ringing, buzzing, or roaring in the ears.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are two main types of NIHL:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Acoustic trauma:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Instant hearing loss from one very loud, forceful sound (like a gunshot or firecracker). This damage is often permanent.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Chronic NIHL:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Gradual hearing loss from repeated exposure to loud sounds over time (like noisy worksites or even loud headphones). It can take weeks, months, or years before you notice the problem.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Beyond the job: The personal impact of hearing loss<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hearing loss doesn\u2019t just affect you at work. It changes your whole life.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Conversations become harder. Background noise makes it tough to follow what\u2019s being said.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Social situations can feel isolating. It\u2019s easier to avoid gatherings than struggle to keep up.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Confidence takes a hit. Many people with hearing loss feel self-conscious about asking others to repeat themselves.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Relationships are impacted. Miscommunication and frustration can creep in with family and friends.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And the effects don\u2019t stop there. Untreated NIHL has been linked to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anxiety and depression.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fatigue and insomnia from straining to hear.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">High blood pressure, increased heart rate, and stress.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Irritability and hyperacusis (heightened sensitivity to sound).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In short, it doesn\u2019t just change what you can hear, it changes how you live, connect, and feel day to day.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Protecting your ears on-site<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The good news is that hearing loss from noise exposure is <\/span><b>100% preventable<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
