With long workdays and weeks placing the body under intense physical and mental strain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Worker fatigue is one of the biggest hazards on-site. Fatigue can come in many different forms and be caused by a number of different factors. While fatigue may not be avoidable in today\u2019s busy cycle, it is important we recognise the signs of fatigue and steps to reduce it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Because at the end of the day, a tired worker is a dangerous worker.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Responsibilities for managing fatigue\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When you\u2019re fatigued, you\u2019re less alert and aware of your environment. This can lead to increased risk of errors resulting in injuries or incidents on-site.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On-site it\u2019s both the individuals and the employers responsibility to recognise and reduce worker fatigue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Employer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As an employer on-site you are required to provide a safe working environment, and reducing fatigue is included. Here are a few strategies for ensuring everyone stays fresh.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Working schedules \u2013 Make sure your team isn&#8217;t working too many long shifts, get your team to take regular breaks and schedule tasks throughout the day to maximise peak energy periods.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sleep \u2013 design rosters or workweeks in a way that doesn\u2019t negatively impact normal sleep patterns too much<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ask questions \u2013 be sure to check in with your team, how they are feeling may be impacting their energy levels at work\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Limit or avoid extreme conditions \u2013 working in extreme heat or cold weather is extremely draining. Limit prolonged exposure to these conditions if possible<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Understand your team \u2013 everyone in your team or on-site is different. Make sure workloads and requests are manageable and within skill\/ experience levels<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Review or implement fit for work procedures \u2013 this will formalise everyone\u2019s role in reducing fatigue on-site.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Workers<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Workers are also personally responsible for turning up every day in the best mental and physical conditions possible, so that what they do on-site doesn\u2019t affect the health and safety of others. Workers should:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Put themselves in a position to get the most sleep and recovery as possible between shifts and workweeks\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Inform their supervisor if their circumstances change or if there is anything affecting their energy levels which may impact their ability to work<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Know and listen to their body, and take action when it\u2019s saying \u201cI\u2019m tired!\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Report fatigue-related incidents, whether it is them personally or another on-site<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Practical steps for managing fatigue seasonally<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Our bodies operate differently during the cooler and warmer months. During winter, fatigue levels tend to increase. With the colder temperatures, longer nights and reduced sunlight, our bodies naturally tend to shut down earlier in the day. During summer, we benefit a lot from longer days and more sunlight, however we need to consider fatigue due to hot weather and maintaining our hydration levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here are a few steps you can take.<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Enjoy the sun and get outdoors as much as possible during your day<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Prioritise good sleep. Everyone needs somewhere between 6-9 hours of sleep a night. Getting good quality uninterrupted sleep will help recharge the batteries and fight off the winter drowsiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Exercise regularly. Regular exercise will help keep you energised and can actually help you sleep\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Relax, don\u2019t stress<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Eat well and fuel your body with the nutrients it needs to recover and sustain itself<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keep yourself hydrated during the warmer months<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Seek shade where possible<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fatigue is something that we all face in our busy work lives and is often unavoidable. However, it is critical we can recognise the signs of fatigue in ourselves or someone on-site.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By being able to recognise the signs and take the necessary steps to help is the best way to reduce fatigue-related problems on-site.
