Touching a live overhead line with any part of the body, tools or any other equipment can cause serious injury and even fatality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Make sure that you and your team are aware of the following steps that can be taken to manage the risk of an electric shock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Forward planning is essential. Before work starts, the person in control should:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Identify <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">all overhead electric lines in the area where work will be carried out<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Assess <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the risk of harm<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Eliminate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the risk of electric shock by disconnecting the electricity supply to the overhead lines<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Minimise<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> if you are not able to disconnect the electrical supply then implement other controls such as insulation.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>Eliminating the risk of electric shock<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Disconnecting the electric supply for work between 0.5 metres and 4 metres<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The safest option to eliminate the risk of electric shock is to temporarily disconnect a property\u2019s electricity supply from the electricity distribution lines so that the overhead line to the property is no longer live.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>Keep people informed so they can plan ahead<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Find out who needs to know that the electricity supply will be temporarily disconnected. Such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The property owner<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">People working on-site<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other businesses working at the site \u2013 in this case, businesses must use the 3 C\u2019s \u2013 consult, cooperate and coordinate activities to manage the shared health and safety risks. You can read more about this in our blog <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hazardco.com\/nz\/blog\/overlapping-duties-working-with-other-businesses\/\"><b><i>\u2018Overlapping Duties: Working with other businesses\u2019\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anyone who could be affected by the disconnection of the electricity supply should be told:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How long the power will be off<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Who will be affected and when<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What will be done to ensure that the power is off for as short a time as possible?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Minimum Approach Distances (MADs)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If work needs to take place near an overhead electric line then the worker\u2019s body, their tools, and their equipment must be kept a safe distance away from the overhead line, else the electrical supply must be disconnected by the approved electrical retailer. This safe distance is known as the minimum approach distance, or MAD.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If\u00a0 less than 0.5 m: the electricity supply to the property must be disconnected before work starts and until the work is done.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If 0.5 m to 4 m: before work starts, written consent is needed from the overhead line owner before work can take place.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If more than 4 m: work can start. Consent is not needed from the overhead line owner for work to take place.
