Don’t let the winter freeze put the brakes on your site

Winter weather can hit hard. We’re talking freezing winds, pouring rain, and temperatures that make you question your life choices.

Between slippery scaffolding, numb fingers, and gear getting wrecked, the cold months bring a whole new set of hazards to site. But the job doesn’t stop just because the temperature drops. Here is how to keep everyone safe, dry, and keep things moving this winter.

Do your morning walk-around

Before the work starts, check the site. If you’re in a part of the country that gets frosty or snowed under, clear those walkways, stairs, and platforms before anyone steps on them. Gravity always wins, but it wins a lot easier on ice.

Tip: Jump on the HazardCo App first thing and run a quick Site Assessment to log any new winter hazards.

Watch the roads (and the yard)

Winter driving risks don’t stop at the site gate. Mud, ice, and surface water can turn your work yard into a skating rink. Remind the team to slow down, take extra care in the utes and diggers, and check their tyres and tread.

  • Got 5 minutes? Run a Vehicle Checklist on your app to make sure the fleet’s wipers, lights, and tyres are actually up to the job.

Keep an eye on the sky

Don’t let a sudden downpour catch you out. Check the forecast before you head out so you can plan the day. If nasty weather is rolling in after lunch, get the outdoor jobs ticked off early and save the indoor fit-outs for when the heavens open.

Gear up properly

The right PPE makes all the difference when you’re battling the elements. Make sure the team is sorted with:

  • Layers: High-vis jackets and warm layers. A liner under the hard hat keeps the heat in, just make sure to use a chin strap so it doesn’t blow away in a gale.
  • Clear vision: Give safety glasses a spray with anti-fog tech so the team can actually see what they’re cutting.
  • Good gloves: You want them warm enough to stop numb fingers, but not so thick that the team can’t grip their tools safely.
  • Dry feet: Waterproof boots with a solid grip are a must. Pro-tip: double up on socks to keep the moisture away.

We’re in this together

A safe site is a productive site, even in the depths of July. Keep it simple, look out for your mates, and let’s get through the cold months in one piece.
