6 site red flags you can’t afford to ignore (and how to fix them)

A “red flag” is a clear warning sign. On a construction site, red flags range from a messy workspace to missing paperwork. Ignoring them increases the risk of accidents, delays, or WorkSafe fines. Some red flags are obvious, while others slip under the radar. Fixing them keeps your team safe every day.

Here are six common red flags on site and how HazardCo can help to fix them.

🚩 1. Inadequate Site Security & Fencing

Why it’s a red flag:

An unsecured site allows unauthorised entry. Members of the public or children can wander on site, risking serious injury and exposing your business to theft and liability.

How to fix it:

Set up secure temporary perimeter fencing before work starts. Check that panels are clipped tightly and bottom gaps prevent children or gear from slipping through. Ensure gates are secured when the site is unattended.

🚩 2. A messy or cluttered site

Why it’s a red flag:

Slips, trips, and falls are common injuries. Offcuts, leads, and debris create hazards that can cause injuries and slow down progress.

How to fix it:

Make clean-up part of the daily routine. Place bins nearby work areas and secure lightweight materials so the wind doesn’t scatter it across the site.

🚩 3. Missing or incomplete site signage

Why it’s a red flag:

Safety information and emergency contact details must be visible for visitors, the team and emergency services. Missing information delays response times, and incorrect signage puts everyone at risk.

How to fix it:

Put up a clear HazardCo Site Board at the entrance featuring:

  • Company name and contact info
  • Emergency contact details
  • Mandatory PPE requirements for site entry
  • Directions to the office or sign-in point

🚩 4. High-risk work

Why it’s a red flag:

Working at heights, excavating, or working near power lines without having the right controls puts everyone in serious danger.

How to fix it:

Review a Task Analysis (TA) or the SSSP before starting. Make sure the team understands and signs off on controls. If conditions change, stop work immediately and update your risk assessment

🚩 5. Incidents and near misses not being reported

Why it’s a red flag:

Unreported incidents and near misses lead to future accidents. If unreported, they stay unmanaged and failing to report serious events can result in serious injuries and heavy fines.

How to fix it:

Encourage workers to log incidents and near misses right away. Using the HazardCo App, teams can log issues in seconds, instantly syncing to your incident register.

🚩 6. Out-of-date or missing health & safety documentation

Why it’s a red flag:

Safety regulations and site conditions constantly change. Relying on old paper forms or memory alone leaves your business vulnerable to fines and stop-work orders.

How to fix it:

Ditch the messy paper forms in your ute. Switch to digital safety with the HazardCo App to keep site reviews, risk assessments and other safety documents updated on your phone.
