This can be managed simply \u2013 just follow the three C\u2019s \u2013 Consultation, Cooperation, and Coordination and you\u2019re on your way to a safer work site!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The role of the Employer<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Basically, an Employer is required to ensure the health and safety of their workers, contractors or any visitors who might be affected by work operations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On-site this means that there can be a lot of overlapping duties, so the principal contractor is responsible for coordinating with other businesses\/trades\/subcontractors so they can all meet their combined responsibilities. In these situations, the most effective way to manage workplace health and safety is by working together.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Three C\u2019s &#8211; Consultation, Cooperation &amp; Coordination\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By following the three C\u2019s everyone will be aware of their overlapping duties, so roles can be clearly defined and work isn\u2019t impacted.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Consultation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Consultation between businesses can help you all reach a common understanding and establish clear roles, responsibilities, and actions in relation to work health and safety. Consultation could require discussions around:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What work activities are being carried out, how and by who<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The degree of influence and control each business has over the workplace (eg. contracts\/written agreements)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Who will manage what and how (eg. notifying incidents)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What systems will be put in place to monitor compliance (eg. reviewing the site, how often and who by)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What ongoing communication looks like between themselves and between the workers (eg. toolbox meetings\/newsletters\/points of contact)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Cooperation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">From the consultation comes cooperation. This simply means sharing information and working together to put in place systems for managing and controlling risk agreed during the consultation process. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Working together can increase the scope of the hazards recognised \u2013 ultimately making the site safer!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Coordination<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And last but not least \u2013 now actually making sure everything works well together. Businesses should be able to coordinate on what systems will be implemented to control risks. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This isn\u2019t about one business pushing all the duties down on another, it\u2019s about everyone involved working together to avoid duplication, or worse, health and safety risks.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><br \/>\nThe Benefits<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What may seem like a hassle at first, is actually a huge benefit to life on-site. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keeping people safe should always be the top priority on any construction site &#8211; and of course, Health and safety laws actually require this to be the case.
