But the danger hasn\u2019t gone away. Think back to your first time on a busy worksite, it probably felt overwhelming with so much happening around you. That same level of danger is still there. The problem is, after being around it for a while, your brain starts to ignore it and switches into \u201cautopilot.\u201d That\u2019s when incidents happen. You have to make a conscious effort to stay alert because worksites are always changing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Common incidents:\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Hitting your body on an object<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; This can be anything from hitting your head on scaffolding, grazing your leg or catching your arm on a protruding object.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Manual handling<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; Lower back strains and sprains, shoulder injuries, torn muscles, and ligaments. Muscle injuries can have lengthy healing times and can be crippling.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Nail guns<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; Lack of regular equipment servicing, sufficient training, and PPE can result in penetration injuries most commonly to the hands. These injuries can cause permanent damage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Hand tools<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; Commonly used tools such as hammers, hand saws and angle grinders. . Injuries usually result due to tools being dropped or misused.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Slips\/trips<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; Uneven ground surfaces, poor housekeeping, incorrect footwear, and weather conditions are common causes for slips and trips.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Corrective actions and recommendations<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Hit body on object\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Plan tasks prior to carrying them out<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Assess the surroundings and adjust work tasks accordingly<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Take time navigating around the site<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Think about what you\u2019re doing, not what you\u2019re going to do<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Check to see if any surfaces, sharp edges or protruding objects need to be protected or removed<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Manual handling\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Plan lifts prior to lifting loads, and ensure the path is clear\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use mechanical aids to assist with lifting wherever possible<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Consider splitting heavier loads and minimising the distance the load is carried<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Adjust the work area to eliminate awkward positions and overreaching<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Warm up\/stretch before each work day and after rest periods (lunch) &#8211; especially when the weather is colder\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do not lift beyond abilities. Everyone is different in terms of what they can safely lift. Determine the weight and consider other alternatives as required. Such as a two person lift.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Train workers in safe manual handling techniques<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ensure appropriate footwear is worn<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Nail gun\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ensure the right nail gun is selected for the task<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Regular inspection and maintenance to ensure the equipment is in good working condition<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Consider the trigger system setting and the experience level of the operator. Bump fire or multi shot mode have a higher risk of injury.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do not fire in line with another person or into knots in the timber<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Provide adequate instruction, training and information to workers on safe handling and use of nail guns.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Provide direct supervision to inexperienced workers until they are deemed competent<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Discuss the risk of using nail guns on-site in your toolbox meetings<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pre-starts should be completed every day<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Task specific PPE to be worn (Gloves, boots, safety glasses, etc)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Hand Tools\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Visually inspect the tool before use. Any sign of damage\/wear and tear, then replace the tool (if it\u2019s bent, don\u2019t bend it back &#8211; replace it!)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Take your time &#8211; ensure you have a firm grip on the tool and check your surroundings.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use the correct tool for the job<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Review your hand placement. Ensure your free hand is as far away from the area as possible. It may be needed to hold the item steady, but ensure it is far away from blades\/hammerheads as possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ensure appropriate PPE is worn for the task and the equipment used (Gloves, hard hat, etc)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Slip\/trips\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Slow down in adverse wear conditions &#8211; If the worksite is dangerous, consider whether it is safe to work (flooded\/boggy) or to wait until it has dried<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Things such as grit tape (or similar) can help provide grip in slippery areas such as outdoor ramps<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ensure housekeeping is maintained to remove obstacles and create clear pathways<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wipe\/dry wet flooring wherever possible (especially tiles\/lino\/varnished flooring)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Plan tasks prior to carrying them out and avoid rushing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Appropriate footwear should be worn<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Of course, reach out to HazardCo and speak to one of our expert Health and Safety Advisors if you have any questions or need more support on ways to combat common incidents on-site.
