So it makes sense that we document what\u2019s on-site and when.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If you have hazardous substances on-site, there are processes that, by law, you need to follow to ensure they are stored, used, and disposed of correctly and to reduce the risk to anyone that uses or comes into contact with them.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On 1 January 2021, Australia began a two-year transition to the revised edition of the Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS 7). This new system replaces the previous Approved Criteria for Classifying Hazardous Substances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Despite the transition period, we recommend you start making the changes to labelling, SDS, and packaging as soon as possible.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can find out more about the changes below so you can make sure you are up to date with the latest info.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There has been changes to the Hazard Classifications, and you will no longer use the following classes for your hazardous substances:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Class 1 Explosives<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Class 2 Flammability gases<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Class 3 Flammability liquids<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Class 4 Flammability solids<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Class 5 Oxidising<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Class 6 Toxic<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Class 8 Corrosive<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Class 9 Ecotoxic<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The new GHS7 for hazardous substances will be classed as a physical hazard, a health hazard or an environmental hazard, detailed below:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Physical hazards<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Explosives<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Flammable gases<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Flammable aerosols<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Oxidising gases<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gases under pressure<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Compressed gas<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Liquefied gas<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dissolved gas<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Refrigerated liquefied gas<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Flammable liquids<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Flammable solids<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pyrophoric liquids<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pyrophoric solids<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Self-heating substances<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Substances and mixtures which, in contact with water, emit flammable gases\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Oxidising liquids<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Oxidising solids<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Organic peroxides<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Corrosive to metals<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Health hazards<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Acute toxicity: Oral, dermal, inhalation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Skin corrosion\/irritation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Serious eye damage\/eye irritation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sensitisation of the Respiratory tract or skin\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Germ cell mutagenicity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Carcinogenicity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reproductive toxicity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Specific target organ \u2013 toxicity single exposure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Specific target organ toxicity \u2013 repeated exposure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Aspiration hazard<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Environmental hazards<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hazardous to the aquatic environment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hazardous to the terrestrial environment. (This hazard class is not part of the GHS 7 classification system, but was added to ensure risks to the terrestrial environment continue to be managed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What this means for you<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You will need to ensure that your SDS, packaging and labelling of substances has been updated to reflect the new classes or you are in the process of updating. This can be done by reaching out to the supplier or manufacturer of substances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>What is a Hazardous substance register?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is a list of all your hazardous substances (including hazardous waste) that is used, handled, or stored at any of your sites or workplaces. Having a register will ensure you know the substances you have on-site, the requirements you need-to-know, and what to do in case of an emergency.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>Keeping a Hazardous substance register<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keeping your register in a central location on your site means that in case of an emergency, it can be accessed quickly by anyone who needs it. There are some key bits of information that need to be included on your hazardous substance registers. Not only do you need the information below, but you must also make sure that the register is up to date and available on-site.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The name of the substance\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Issue date of the current safety data sheet t<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The maximum quantity that is stored at the workplace<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Where it\u2019s located<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Specific storage requirements<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Any hazardous waste<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Because the register represents the maximum amount of the substance held, it means it\u2019s not going to be a daily task to keep it up-to-date. But if the maximum quantity changes, the register needs to reflect this.
