That means the risks that affect your team&#8217;s mental wellbeing need to be managed the same way you&#8217;d manage any other hazard on site. Here&#8217;s what&#8217;s expected of you, in plain English.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The same process you already use<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You don&#8217;t need a new system. You manage psychosocial risk using the same four steps you use for everything else:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Identify<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the hazard<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Assess<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the risk<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Control<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the risk<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Review<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> your controls<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you can do this for a fall hazard, you can do it for a psychosocial one.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Psychosocial hazards to look out for<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These are the workplace factors that can harm psychological health when they&#8217;re excessive or prolonged. The ones to consider include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">High or low job demands<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Low job control<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Poor support<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Low role clarity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Poor workplace relationships and conflict<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Poor management of organisational change<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Low recognition and reward<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Poor organisational justice<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Remote or isolated work<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bullying<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Harassment, including sexual harassment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Aggression or violence<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Exposure to traumatic events or material<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Not all of these will apply to every site, but you&#8217;re expected to know which ones are relevant to your work and deal with them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How to control the risk<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use the hierarchy of controls\u00a0 in the same order of priority you&#8217;d use for any hazard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Start by eliminating the risk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> so far as is reasonably practicable (meaning you do what&#8217;s proportionate to the risk and what you can reasonably manage).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Where you can&#8217;t eliminate it, reduce it by changing how the work is done first.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> That means looking at things like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Workloads<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rostering<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Supervision<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Staffing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Site layout<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How people interact<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Use information, instruction and training to back up those changes, not to replace them.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Training someone to &#8220;cope better&#8221; with an unreasonable workload isn&#8217;t a control. Fixing the workload is. Training supports the higher-order controls; it doesn&#8217;t stand in for them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is the part employers most often get wrong, so it&#8217;s worth repeating: change the work first, then train people on the changes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Make it safe to speak up<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Encourage your workers and contractors to report any psychosocial hazard or psychological injury to their supervisor, the principal contractor, or a manager. They should use the same reporting pathway they&#8217;d use for any other hazard, and they should be able to do it without fear of reprisal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You&#8217;re also expected to consult your workers when you identify, assess and control these risks. The people doing the work usually see the hazards first.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>When to review your controls<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Review your psychosocial control measures and change them when needed:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You&#8217;re about to change the way work is done in a way that could change the risk<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">New information about a psychosocial hazard becomes available<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A worker (or someone on their behalf) reports a psychosocial hazard or a psychological injury<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A notifiable incident involving a psychosocial hazard occurs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your existing controls aren&#8217;t adequately controlling the risk<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>The bottom line<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Managing psychological health isn&#8217;t a separate compliance exercise. It&#8217;s the same identify\u2013assess\u2013control\u2013review process you already run, applied to the risks you can&#8217;t always see.
