Although you can\u2019t predict when they will happen, you can take actions to make your business more prepared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Do you and your workers know what to do if a disaster strikes?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An emergency plan is a health and safety requirement necessary for keeping everyone safe, and not having one is a big risk for your business and your workers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Your emergency plan should include the following:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Emergency procedures for fire, flood, and other hazards.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Designated assembly points, wardens, and first aiders.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Contact information for staff, suppliers, and clients.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alternative arrangements if you are unable to access your premises\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What to consider when making an emergency plan:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When working out your emergency plan, you must take into account:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The size and location of your workplace<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The number of workers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The nature of the work being carried out and the workplace hazards<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The types of emergency situations your workplace may face<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Maintaining and testing emergency plans:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A well-maintained emergency plan should be reviewed and updated when:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are changes to work activities or the physical workplace<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Workers with emergency responsibilities change<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">New risks are identified.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Testing your emergency plan is important to ensure it works:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Testing can be as simple as thinking of a scenario (e.g. a fire) and staging a mock emergency, such as a fire drill to test how well the plan works.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Following any testing, a review should be conducted to identify areas for improvement or updating. This should include seeking and considering feedback from your workers<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Worker Engagement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Involve workers in emergency planning and decisions. All workers should know who is responsible for activating and coordinating emergency procedures and what they must do to keep themselves and others safe in an emergency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>First Aid Kits and Fire Extinguishers\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Having first aid kits and fire extinguishers readily available ensures that workers can quickly address emergencies, potentially saving lives and preventing extensive property damage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keeping you and your workmates safe at work is a top priority, so it\u2019s important to understand what your business needs for an effective emergency plan.
